Dean’s Letter: The Pace of Change in Silicon Valley

“We are updating our programs, adding new courses, revamping our online course offerings, and creating a growing number of skill-specific digital badges.”

Accelerating Out of the Curves

A few years ago, I decided to try my hand at Formula 1 racecar driving. I wanted to improve my commuting skills and fulfill a dream to race competitively, to drive as fast as I could without any barrier. Racecar driving teaches you a lot about yourself, how you handle risk and how well you maintain control of the machine as you speed into the future. In some ways, it’s a lot like navigating a successful Silicon Valley career.

In Silicon Valley we are on the go, learning all the time, fitting education into our busy lives to keep our skills relevant. Just as you download a new update for your software, you have to do that for your personal knowledge as well. This is our new normal. Whether you’re a career-seeker, career-advancer, or career-changer, we’re helping you stay up to date with the latest in Silicon Valley.

While our accredited UC-quality certificates set you apart, at Extension we’re constantly adapting. We are working to reflect the evolving market demand. We are updating our programs, adding new courses, revamping our online course offerings, and creating a growing number of skill-specific digital badges.

At the beginning of the year, we welcomed three new program directors who bring an enthusiastic new vision to our expanding program areas: Sridevi Pudipeddi, director of technology; Claudia Terrizzano, director of business and management; and Derek DeMarco, director of both biosciences and education.

Reflecting the rapid changes underway, you are reading the final printed catalog. Look for our new smartphone app to guide you through the registration process, keep you up-to-date on the latest campus events, and connect you with our exceptional staff. Going digital is not just greener and the right thing to do; the truth is the quarterly catalog can no longer keep pace with the changes underway. We want you to have the latest information about our new courses immediately.

Congratulations on your decision to get in the driver’s seat and take the controls! Let us help you map your way so you can focus on what’s ahead and accelerate out of the turns.
